Tune up your smile with dental veneers
All smiles are beautiful by their very nature, of course. A smile can melt a heart, change the course of someone’s day, defuse a cranky attitude and be the one bright spot of encouragement in a day otherwise bleak and lonely. The power of a smile, even a less than perfect smile, is awesome.
Not all of us were blessed with a blinding Julia Roberts or George Clooney smile, but those smiles belong to them. Your smile is uniquely yours, no one else’s, but if there is something about your teeth that is making you self conscious and reluctant to express your happiness by spontaneously smiling you are limiting your self expression.
Big changes come with a tiny piece of porcelain
There are many options available in the field of cosmetic dentistry to improve on the small imperfections mother nature has left, the chips, cracks and discolorations left by accidents, illness, or staining from food or smoking over the years. One of the best choices is dental veneers.
Dental veneers are one of the fastest and easiest ways to improve the appearance of your teeth. Made of porcelain, the veneer has the delicate translucence of fine china and this gives it a natural appearance. Basically, veneers are thin coverings to the front and edges of the tooth. Tooth material is removed depending on the need for smile correction and the veneer is bonded to the tooth.
Veneers can help correct appearance flaws and oral health concerns caused by:
- broken and crooked teeth
- gaps in between teeth,
- stained or dingy colored teeth.
They can also mask undesirable defects such as teeth:
- stained by tetracycline
- damaged by an injury
- weakened as a result of a root-canal procedure.
They are ideal for masking discolored fillings in front teeth.
Veneers are usually made by a dental lab technician working from a model provided by Dr. Polan. Veneers are usually irreversible because it`s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.
Enhance your smile in just three visits
Typically, veneers can be completed in three appointments.
During the tooth preparation visit, usually lasting one to two hours, the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed, which may require a local anesthetic. During the same visit, a mold is taken of the teeth, and sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers.
During the “bonding” visit, also about one or two hours, the veneers are placed on the tooth surface with water or glycerin on the teeth to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or color. While the veneers are resting on your teeth, they can be adjusted with various shades of cement to match the color of your teeth. To apply the veneer, the tooth is cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. Once a special cement is sandwiched between the veneer and tooth, a visible light beam, or laser, causes a catalyst to be released, hardening the cement.
During a two-week period of adjustment that follows, you may notice the change of size and shape in your teeth. It is important to brush and floss daily. After one or two weeks, you`ll return for a follow-up appointment.
