Not Enough Bone for a Dental Implant?

A bone graft is a process which repairs inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease or injuries. The bone is usually transferred from a tissue bank, though it can also be taken from the patient’s own jaw, hip or tibia (below the knee). If a jawbone associated with missing teeth has shrunken or sustained significant damage, the implant(s) cannot be supported on the unstable foundation and bone grafting is recommended. The success of a restoration procedure can vary widely depending on the width, depth, and height of the patient’s jawbone at the implant site.

Sinus Lift (Graft)

A Sinus Lift is a method of surgery enabling an increase in the amount of bone tissue of the upper jaw above the molars and premolars. This is done by lifting the sinus membrane and inserting donor bone into the floor of the sinus. Once completely healed, the new bone has become part of the patient’s jaw and is sturdy enough for dental implants to be inserted and stabilized.

For some patients, enough bone is available between the upper jaw and sinus to stabilize an implant immediately, so the sinus augmentation and implant placement can be performed simultaneously. For most others, the sinus augmentation will be done primarily and then the graft will need to mature over the course of several months before the implants can be placed. The amount of maturation time will depend on the type of graft material used.
