What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a common condition where an individual subconsciously clenches or grinds their teeth. This can happen whether they’re awake or asleep, and is considered both a dental issue and a medical issue due to the damage it can cause the teeth and the entire structure of the head.

Effects of Bruxism

Teeth grinding can come about due to a number of different reasons, most prominently stress and jaw misalignment. It’s not a major health issue, though if it progresses it can lead to TMJ and other problems with the mouth, jaw, and face. Make sure to visit a dentist if teeth grinding persists to avoid any long-term issues.

Indications of Bruxism

  • Intense clenching
  • Chipped, cracked, are worn down teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Pain and tightness in the jaw
  • Earaches
  • Headaches
  • Facial pain
  • Chewed cheek tissue

Treatment for Bruxism

The most common treatment for bruxism is to have the patient custom-fitted for a mouth guard. These are made with a comfortable high-grade plastic which perfectly fits the upper teeth, acting as a bite pad preventing the upper and lower jaw from clenching or grinding together.
