How Often Should You Visit The Dentist?

On average, it’s recommended for people to come into the dentist twice yearly for cleanings and checkups. However, patients with implants, crowns, or who are at risk for gum disease may need to visit more frequently for optimal care and health. Checkups are important to allow the dentist to check for the early stages of any dental problems which you may not see or feel.

What Happens At The Typical Check-Up Appointment?

  • Cleaning: Plaque buildup is removed by regular flossing and brushing, but only a professional cleaning by a dental hygienist will remove tartar, which is hardened plaque
  • Polishing: Using an abrasive substance and fluoride, the dental hygienist will polish each tooth and remove any stains and excess plaque.
  • Prevention: If the dental hygienist determines it’d be beneficial for your dental health to alter your oral hygiene habits, they might offer some experienced advice to help keep your smile in shape and minimize the risk of gum disease.
  • Digital X-Rays: We use ‘Digital X-Rays’ as opposed to traditional x-rays since they expose the patient to significantly less radiation.

Treatment Recommendations: After your check-up examination, the dentist or dental hygienist may make recommendations for further oral health care if necessary. This oral care may include additional diagnostic tests, restoration work, or a referral to another relevant oral health care specialist.
