Sleep Apnea / Snoring

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder which affects tens of millions of people. Sleep Apnea is a life-threatening condition as it can be dismissed as loud or heavy snoring when it actually regularly stops the person from breathing for more than 10 seconds.

How Does Sleep Apnea Occur?

Sleep apnea occurs when breathing stops during sleep due to heavy snoring. This can happen many (sometimes hundreds) of times per night. The brain will briefly awaken the individual after each apnea event to resume breathing, but will leave no memory of the incident. This leaves the individual with a very fragmented sleep pattern, resulting in a plethora of other health issues such as: high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, impotency, and many others.

Treatment Options

  • CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a machine which delivers oxygen through a mask worn during sleep, forcing air pressure through the airways. The treatment is successful, but the mask can be very uncomfortable for some people and the machine itself can be very noisy, making sleep impossible anyways.
  • For people who don’t find CPAP to be an option, an alternative exists. Oral Appliance Therapy is a comfortable custom-made mouthpiece used for mild to moderate sleep apnea. They prevent the collapse of the airway by repositioning the individuals jaw and tongue to allow adequate air intake. If necessary, they can be used in conjunction with other treatments.
