Dan

“I learned about Dr. Polan from an ad in the Salem News. What stood out for me was the website that was on the ad and it said be cpapfree.com. Now being someone with obstructive sleep apnea, and knowing all about cpap masks because i tried wearing one before and could not do it, I did a double take when reading the ad. I had to make sure it said what I thought it said. I called the number on the ad and off i went to see Dr. Polan.

I also should note I had not seen a dentist in 10 years and he somehow found a way to take enough of my fear away. To make a long story short, I not only made an appointment for oral appliance therapy to treat my sleep apnea, but i made a dental appointment as well. So I conquered two goals with one person. What else could one ask for? Thank you.”

North Shore Magazine: The Best of Health, 2009

Challenge….. That is the word that best describes what fuels Dr. Benjamin Polan’s life and work. He has heli- skied at the top of the mountains of Colorado, as well as, while an instructor at Sunday River, successfully taught terrified adult beginners how to ski. Dr. Polan carries that love into his work.

Here at Exceptional Dental patients are treated as a whole person. We strive to have a comfortable relationship with each and every one of them. That is the very reason Dr. Polan has invested in the absolute latest technology that benefits the patient’s experience. Technology such as CEREC the in-office-crown system, with CEREC a patient can expect to have a tooth restored in just one visit. Most dentists would agree that dealing with a profoundly frightened patient is a challenge.

The Exceptional Dental offers Sedation Dentistry to those patients who would otherwise forgo dental care. Under sedation a patient will calmly and easily receive much needed dentistry. Another challenge Dr. Polan often faces in his practice is dealing with chronic pain in our TMJ patients. The average dentist has never gone any further than dental school to increase their knowledge and skill of patient pain associated with TMJ. Dr. Polan continues that education today which may explain his high success rate with these patients.

The Exceptional Dental also provides solutions and care for those who suffer from snoring or sleep disorders. We can create a dental appliance for those who cannot tolerate the popularly prescribed CPAP appliance. This is just a glimpse of what can be done by Dr. Polan at Exceptional Dental.

Challenge…. Dr. Polan will meet another one this summer as he travels to Israel to volunteer to provide much needed dentistry to some of the impoverished children of Jerusalem.

Root Canal

Root Canals

Root Canals

Dentist Dr. Benjamin Polan takes the dread out of Root Canals in Beverly, MA

We all display a similar grimace once a ‘root canal’ is mentioned

Once upon a time this procedure really was terribly painful and uncomfortable, but with advances in dental technology dentists are able to perform a root canal with no more discomfort than placing a filling. A root canal is often recommended by dentists in order to save the tooth, rather than extract it.

What is the Root Canal Procedure?

The root canal is the pocket where the tooth nerve resides enveloped in a pulp chamber. The pulp material is actually loose connective tissue that protects the nerve. The chamber also contains sensory nerves which carry signals to the brain, and in the case of nerve damage, the pain signal will be relayed to the brain and dental pain is experienced.

During a root canal procedure, the nerve is removed, and the canal area is filled with a bio-compatible rubbery substance called Gutta Percha. The procedure begins with the application of a topical anesthetic to the gum area and an injection of local anesthetic if necessary. A hole is placed in the nerve chamber and the nerve is removed leaving the tooth intact. The canal is reshaped to hold the Gutta Percha. A temporary filling is put in place and then a return visit is necessary for the final restoration.

After a root canal, the tooth becomes weaker and more brittle, so the post and crown are used to give the tooth strength and integrity. If it’s an exceptionally strong tooth, the post and crown will not be needed. The root canal itself will usually take 1-2 visits, and the final restoration is typically an additional visit.

Avoiding a Root Canal is not good Dental Practice

The longer the procedure is put off the higher the risk for significant tooth damage. Bacteria will continue to accumulate in the tooth area and may cause the tooth to become infected or abscess. The patient may also experience swelling in the head, neck or face areas and bone may be lost in the area surrounding the tip of the root of the damaged tooth. If an infection or abscess has occurred the draining pus can cause a hole to form in the tooth, and the pus may continue draining into the gum area or skin.

Fear of Dental Pain keeping you from saving your teeth?

Beverly, MA dentist, Dr. Benjamin Polan puts his training and experience to work every day for dental patients and provides root canals that are as pain free as possible. Gone are the days when root canal were synonymous with extreme pain. Dr. Polan is committed to using state of the art techniques and equipment to provide the best dental care available. Saving the natural tooth with a root canal will restore the natural appearance of the tooth, efficiency in chewing, regular biting force and will protect other teeth from excessive strain and wear.

Wisdom Teeth

Why removing your wisdom teeth might be right for you

Wisdom Teeth

Why removing your wisdom teeth might be right for you

Beverly, MA dentist Dr. Benjamin Polan provides wisdom teeth removal

Why remove your wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are known as third molars that come in between the ages of 16 and 25. Many people develop wisdom teeth without any issue but if left alone they may cause problems later in life including partial eruption, imp-actions, lack of space, and cleaning issues.

Problems caused by wisdom teeth

Partial eruption occurs when your teeth do not fully emerge from your gum. This can be a very painful process that traps bacteria and may eventually lead to an infection underneath your jaw bone.

Impaction happens with the tooth actually points the wrong way. If a tooth is pointed towards the front or back of your mouth, horizontally or vertically. An impaction can cause significant pain and possibly damage other teeth.

Lack of space means your mouth may not have enough room for more molars. If this is the case, then your molars will force other teeth to shift which can lead to misalignment of your jaw and teeth.

People often experience difficulty cleaning their wisdom teeth properly since they’re located at the very back of the jaw. Therefore wisdom teeth are more likely to decay and collect bacteria than any other tooth.

Dr. Benjamin Polan’s wisdom teeth examination and treatment

Your wisdom teeth can easily be checked during a regular dental appointment. Dentist Dr. Polan will provide an in depth examination of your teeth. If there is an issue, he will order x-rays for further clarification. The x-rays will show what’s happening under your gums, including any deterioration and decay.

If you are currently experiencing pain from your wisdom teeth, schedule an appointment right away. If wisdom teeth are not treated then the problem will only continue to worsen. It’s important to have your wisdom teeth checked so you can prevent future pain, infection, and discomfort.

Wisdom teeth removal is very common, but it can be complicated if your wisdom teeth are severely damaged. Beverly, MA dentist Dr. Benjamin Polan has the experience to know when the right time is to have your wisdom teeth removed, and will refer you to the best possible oral surgeon for the procedure.

Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer on the rise

Dentist Dr. Benjamin educates about oral cancer in Beverly, MA

Oral cancer on the rise

Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers today and has one of the lowest survival rates, with thousands of new cases being reported each year. Fewer than half of all people diagnosed with oral cancer are ever cured. Moreover, people with many forms of oral cancer can develop complications – some of them chronic and painful – from their cancer treatment. These include dry mouth and overly sensitive teeth, as well as accelerated tooth decay.

If oral cancer is not treated in time, it could spread to other facial and neck tissues, leading to disfigurement and pain. Older adults over the age of 40 (especially men) are most susceptible to developing oral cancer, but people of all ages are at risk. Oral cancer can occur anywhere in the mouth, but the tongue appears to be the most common location. Other oral structures could include the lips, gums and other soft palate tissues in the mouth.

Warning Signs

Early signs of oral cancer usually occur in the form of lumps, patchy areas, lesions, and breaks in the tissues of the mouth. In many cases, these abnormalities are not painful in the early stages, making self-diagnosis difficult.

Here are some additional warning signs:

  • Hoarseness or difficulty swallowing.Unusual bleeding or persistent
  • sores in the mouth that won’t heal.
  • Lumps or growths in other nearby areas, such as the throat or neck.

If a tumor is found, surgery will generally be required to remove it.

Preventing oral cancer

Prevention is the key to staving off oral cancer. One of the biggest culprits is tobacco and alcohol use. Certain kinds of foods and even overexposure to the sun have also been linked to oral cancer. Some experts also believe certain oral cancer risk factors are hereditary.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the best defenses against oral cancer combined with maintaining good oral hygiene and having regular dental checkups. If any of these warnings apply to you, feel free to give a call to Beverly, MA dentist Dr. Benjamin Polan for more information.
