Gum Disease Treatment

With regular dental care and check-ups alongside good dental hygiene, gum infections can be treated quickly to restore your healthy smile. Plaque forms on our teeth from food and other residue which contains bacteria. This builds up along the gum line and releases chemicals which inflame the gums. This can be prevented with regular flossing and brushing but there are hard to reach areas of the mouth where extra care is necessary. Since brushing and flossing can only do so much, going to the dentist is the next step. A dentist such as Dr. Ben Polan can care for your teeth and gums when you schedule regular dental check-ups.

The 3 stages of Periodontal Disease

Gingivitis. The gums are swollen, red, and bleed easily. Luckily the more serious health problems have not yet occurred so it can be easily treated. Most dentists will simply recommend a strict cleaning regimen and the gum issues will disappear before they become a serious problem.

Periodontitis. At this stage, the plaque and its calcified form tartar have built up and the gums are receding away from the teeth. Bacteria and pus fill in pockets between the gums and teeth, and will feel very irritated, inflamed, and painful. There may be some bone loss at this stage as well.

Advanced Periodontitis. Teeth continue to lose support. The gums, bone, and periodontal ligament are slowly being destroyed, and the affected teeth become loose and can fall out. Some people may also suffer moderate to severe bone loss. More serious medical issues can also occur since infections in the mouth can spread throughout the body, including the blood vessels and heart.

Gum disease can be treated in a variety of ways

Beverly, MA dentist Dr. Ben Polan offers his patients many treatment options to remove the infection. Home care and maintenance will be very important in keeping the infection from returning and scheduled follow-up visits will ensure that your mouth is healing normally.
Dentist treatments can include bacterial testing, full mouth disinfection, scaling and root planing, anti-bacterial medications and laser therapy. Bacterial tests check to see if a person is genetically susceptible to gum disease since certain people are born with a higher bacteria count than others.

While gum disease can be treated, it is best to prevent the problem with regular dental visits. Dr. Benjamin Polan would be happy to answer any further questions you might have about gum disease and treatment options, and find the solution which best suits you.
