Plant a fresh smile on your face with dental implants
Your smile is the first thing that someone sees when you say hello. If you are self-conscious about your smile because of missing teeth, dental implants could be your ticket back to a healthy, attractive smile.
A dental implant is a permanent option of tooth replacement that is surgically placed within your jawbone. Before development of dental implants, dentures were the only alternative to replacing a missing tooth or teeth. Composed of an abutment (the crown) and the root device (essentially a titanium screw), the implant fuses to your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. Dr. Ben Polan is a cosmetic dentist that has extensive experience with dental implants.
At Beverly’s Exceptional Dental your dental implant treatment will give you natural looking, healthy teeth. A dental implant is a natural alternative to dentures or bridges. There is generally no need to shape or cut down adjacent healthy teeth and bone when an implant is placed in your mouth. In fact, an implant provides just as much natural stability as your original teeth. Once the implant is secured within your jaw, replacement teeth can be attached to provide function as well as prevent any further bone loss.
How are dental implants “planted”?
First, a mold of your mouth is done through x-rays and examination to determine which teeth need to be replaced and the exact size and location of each implant. The posts are then surgically placed within the jaw and secured permanently. An impression or mold is then created for precise placement of the crown that will sit on top of the post.
The procedure is done under general anesthesia and you will likely need someone to help drive you home safely after the procedure. Follow-up care will involve visiting the surgeon over several weeks to assure that tissue is growing properly around the implant. Any sign of infection or complications should be immediately reported. Overall healing and recovery depends on the success of the procedure and your overall dental health.
Are you a good candidate?
Overall, you must have fairly good dental health and hygiene to be a successful candidate for a dental implant. Your teeth must also be finished growing, therefore most children, and some teens, are not good candidates.
While it doesn’t eliminate you as a candidate for dental implants, if you are a regular smoker, Dr. Polan will need to evaluate your oral health to make sure dentals implants will be an effective treatment for you.
Common problems that can cause tooth loss
- Underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes may cause certain dental problems to worsen over time, this can lead to tooth loss and gum deterioration. Tooth replacement through dental implants can help improve the health of your mouth.
- Advanced gum disease can destroy your teeth and eat away at bone and tissue. The result is missing or cracked teeth and bone disfiguration. An implant can help restructure your mouth and replace teeth that are missing.
Dr. Polan can permanently secure implants to replace your missing teeth to restoring beauty to the problem area. Having a full set of teeth in your mouth can make eating easier and painless. The shape of your face will also fill out giving you a healthier, natural, more youthful appearance.
