Teeth whitening = sparkling teeth
Human beings have been trying to clean and whiten their teeth for centuries, so prized is a bright smile. As early as 3000 B.C. people used twigs with the tip chewed and split into fibres to clean their teeth and remove plaque.
It is said the ancient Romans used goat’s milk and urine on their teeth to whiten them. Studies indicate that most people today overwhelmingly believe that a white smile is important to a good social life and career advancement.
Happily, today people have more options than goats milk, urine, or twigs. A cosmetic dentist can safely and comfortably whiten teeth fast, sometimes up to 10 shades whiter. Teeth whitening is one of the most cost effective ways to improve your smile and more than 100 million people in America whiten their teeth using the various options available.
Why do teeth discolor?
As children, most of us are born with white teeth. Our secondary, or permanent teeth, are usually less white. As we age, our teeth naturally become discolored and darker. The outer covering on the tooth, the enamel, becomes thinner, more porous, and millions of microscopic cracks become filled with materials that stain the tooth. The thinner enamel can also allow the darker colored inner tooth layer known as dentin to show through.
Teeth can be stained by food and drinks, like coffee, tea, red wine, and colas. Smoking and chewing tobacco will also stain teeth. Some health problems and developmental disorders can cause tooth discoloration as well as some medications like tetracycline and excessive fluoride intake. Some people just have naturally yellow or gray tinged teeth as their genetic heritage.
Invest in the best
At Exceptional Dental, we use several different teeth whitening systems, including at home kits and in office whitening. Making an appointment for a consultation is the best way to find which system will work the best for you.
Teeth whitening, or bleaching agents actually change the color of your teeth, but they are not very effective at removing brownish or grayish stains. Nor are they the best choice for pitted or badly discolored teeth, or on restorations such as crowns, bridges, bonding and tooth-colored fillings. In these cases porcelain veneers or dental bonding may be more appropriate.
A teeth whitening treatment supervised by Dr. Polan of Beverly’s Exceptional Dental will protect the surrounding tissues from irritation or damage from the whitening materials more effectively than home whitening treatments. While some commercially available whitening toothpastes can be somewhat effective at removing stains and making teeth a few shades brighter, many of these products have abrasive substances that can actually wear away your tooth’s enamel.
