Big changes come with a tiny piece of porcelain
There are many options available in the field of cosmetic dentistry to improve on the small imperfections mother nature has left. Dental veneers are one of the best options to improve the chips, cracks and discolorations left by accidents, illness, or smoking. Veneers are thin coverings bonded to the front and edges of the tooth. Made of porcelain, the veneer has the delicate translucence of fine china, giving the shell a natural appearance.
Dental veneers can also mask undesirable defects such as teeth:
They are ideal for masking discolored fillings in front teeth.
Veneers are usually made by a dental lab technician working from a model provided by a dentist such as Dr. Benjamin Polan in Beverly, MA. Veneers are usually irreversible because it’s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.
Enhance your smile in just three visits
Typically, veneers are completed in three appointments.
During the first visit, the teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about half a millimeter of the tooth is removed, which may require a local anesthetic. During the same visit, a mold is taken from the teeth and sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers.
During the “bonding” visit, the veneers are placed on the tooth surface with water or glycerin on the teeth to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or color. While the veneers are resting on your teeth, they can be adjusted with various shades of cement to match the color of your teeth. Once a special cement is sandwiched between the veneer and tooth, a laser causes a catalyst to be released, hardening the cement.
During a two-week period of adjustment, you may notice a change in the size and shape of your teeth. It is important to brush and floss daily. After one or two weeks, you`ll return for a follow-up appointment.
There is no reason to suffer embarrassment over tooth imperfections. Whether it’s a small chip, crooked teeth, or discoloration that’s always bothered you, an experienced dentist like Dr. Benjamin Polan in Beverly, MA can help improve your appearance and boost your self-confidence.
